What is floor insulation?
Floor insulation slows heat escaping through your floors. It can improve comfort and reduce heating demand, particularly on the ground floor or above an unheated space.
Suspended timber floors
Insulation usually fits between the joists beneath the floorboards. Access may be possible from below; otherwise, boards may need lifting. Air bricks must stay clear to maintain ventilation.
Solid floors
Concrete floors can be insulated above the slab or during replacement. An added layer can affect floor height. Traditional stone and lime-based floors need specialist advice.

Do upstairs floors need insulation?
Usually not between heated rooms. A floor above an unheated garage or cellar may benefit from thermal insulation.
Will my floorboards need to come up?
It depends on access. Suspended timber floors may be insulated from below where there is enough space; otherwise boards may need lifting.
What if there is damp beneath the floor?
Have damp or timber decay assessed and resolved before insulating. Moisture control and ventilation are part of a suitable design.
How much will the work cost?
Ask your specialist for a quote based on your property and the proposed work. Check whether lifting and reinstating floor finishes are included. We do not calculate a price on this site.
